Beer Mat Advertising: The Complete Guide

A beer mat is the ad format that gets picked up, argued with, and put back down, on purpose, several times, before the tab's even settled. Nothing else in a media plan gets handled like that. It's one of our hero formats, and it's the one that turns a static message into a conversation without you having to do anything except get the creative right.
Why it works
Nobody scrolls past a beer mat. It's parked under a pint glass, in the way, demanding to be dealt with. Pubs and bars hand you a genuinely broad crowd too, near enough an even split by gender, every age bracket represented, for more than 12 hours a day. A beer mat gets moved to make room for the next round, picked back up out of boredom, slid across the table because someone wants a second opinion. Run more than one design and you're exploiting exactly that instinct: a table that's seen one mat wants to know what the others say, and suddenly your campaign is the thing being discussed instead of the thing being ignored.
Who it suits
This is the format for anyone with something worth arguing about. Drinks and entertainment brands use it for the obvious reasons. Charities and public bodies use it for a less obvious one: a beer mat doesn't feel like being sold to, it feels like being told something, which is exactly the register a serious message needs.

What a real campaign looks like
We worked with Shelter on a beer mat campaign built entirely around handwritten personal testimony calling for investment in social housing, real words, real handwriting, nothing polished about it on purpose. That rawness is what made people stop and actually read a beer mat properly, then pass it to the person next to them. Polished creative would have died on that table. This didn't.

How it works logistically
Beer mats are as versatile as your creative team wants them to be, and running multiple designs in one campaign costs you very little for a lot of extra curiosity. Distribution runs across our national pub and bar network, or gets targeted regionally if that's the brief. Pair it with washroom panels in the same venues and you've got two formats working the room from different angles.

Common questions
Can I run more than one design at once? Yes, and honestly, you should. It's the cheapest way to make a static format feel alive.
Does this work for serious or sensitive subjects? Better than most formats, if anything. A beer mat invites a proper read and a proper conversation, which is exactly what a heavier message needs and a glance-and-go poster can't give it.
